Off-grid solar bill of materials template

An off-grid solar system has no grid connection, so a battery bank stores energy for the night and for cloudy days. Its list adds that bank and a power conditioning unit. The table is the default list the app starts from, read from its records when this page is built. Battery and panel quantities are set per project.

How we verify data

How an off-grid system works

The panels charge a battery bank through a charge controller, and an inverter turns the stored energy into alternating current for the loads. Nothing is exported, because there is no grid to receive it. Everything the customer uses has to come from the panels or the batteries.

What is different in this list

Lines found only in this list: Off-Grid Inverter/PCU. Lines in the other lists but not in this one: On-Grid Inverter, AC/DC Distribution Box, Lightning Arrestor, Hybrid Inverter and VFD Panel.

Quantity is left for you to set on: Solar PV Module, Battery Bank, DC Cable and AC Cable.

Quantity is fixed in the template on: Off-Grid Inverter/PCU (1 Nos), Mounting Structure (1 Set) and Earthing Kit (3 Set). Change these if the project needs a different count.

What drives the battery line

The battery bank is sized from how much energy the customer uses between sunset and sunrise, and from how many cloudy days the system should ride through. A larger reserve costs more and takes more space, so this is the line to discuss first with the customer.

The default list leaves the battery quantity blank and points to the battery spec selected in the quotation, because chemistry, voltage and capacity differ by product.

Sizing the panels

Panels must cover the daily load and also refill the batteries, with an allowance for losses in charging and discharging. For that reason an off-grid array is usually larger than an on-grid one serving the same load.

What to put in the quotation

State the battery chemistry, the voltage of the bank, the usable capacity and the warranty terms in plain words. Name the loads the system is designed to run, and say what happens if the customer adds more later.

Where off-grid fits

Off-grid suits sites with no grid or an unreliable one, such as farms, remote buildings and some shops. Where a grid exists and the customer wants backup, a hybrid system is often a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the off-grid list have a battery bank?

With no grid to fall back on, the batteries are the only source after dark. The bank is the line that most affects both cost and how long the system can run without sun.

Does an off-grid system need net metering?

No, because it does not connect to the grid or export power. Check the local rules anyway if the building also has a grid connection.

Can I add lines the default list does not have?

Yes. The default list is only a starting point. If a site needs extra protection, a different structure or a monitoring device, add the line and write its specification yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Settling the battery bank last

The battery bank is sized from the energy used between sunset and sunrise and from the cloudy days the system should ride through. It drives both cost and space, so discuss it first with the customer.

  • Leaving the battery details vague

State the chemistry, the voltage of the bank, the usable capacity and the warranty in plain words. The default list leaves the quantity blank because these differ by product.

  • Saying nothing about added loads

Name the loads the system is designed to run, and say what happens if the customer adds more later.

What to check before you send

  • Battery chemistry, bank voltage, usable capacity and warranty are written out
  • The loads the system is designed to run are named
  • The panels cover the daily load and also refill the batteries
  • Any extra line the site needs, such as protection or monitoring, has its own specification
