On-grid solar bill of materials template
An on-grid solar system runs alongside the utility grid and has no battery. Its bill of materials lists panels, a grid-tied inverter, mounting, protection, cables and earthing. The table is the default list the app starts from, read from its records when this page is built. Quantities that depend on size are left for you to set per project.

How an on-grid system works
The panels make direct current. A grid-tied inverter converts it to alternating current that matches the grid's voltage and frequency, and the building uses that power first. Any shortfall is drawn from the grid, and any surplus can be exported where the utility allows it.
Because the inverter follows the grid, it switches off when the grid fails. That is a safety feature, and it also means an on-grid system without a battery gives no backup during an outage. A customer who wants backup needs a different system type.
What is different in this list
Lines found only in this list: On-Grid Inverter and Lightning Arrestor. Lines in the other lists but not in this one: Off-Grid Inverter/PCU, Battery Bank, Hybrid Inverter and VFD Panel.
Quantity is left for you to set on: Solar PV Module, DC Cable and AC Cable.
Quantity is fixed in the template on: On-Grid Inverter (1 Nos), Mounting Structure (1 Set), AC/DC Distribution Box (1 Set), Earthing Kit (3 Set) and Lightning Arrestor (1 Nos). Change these if the project needs a different count.
Which lines scale with size
Lines whose quantity is left blank in the table depend on the project. Panels scale with the capacity and the panel rating you choose. Cable runs scale with the distance between the roof, the inverter and the meter. The fixed lines usually stay the same whatever the size.
A small home system
A small home system has few panels, one inverter and short cable runs. The structure is simple and the protection box is compact. The main decision is the roof layout, because a small roof limits how many panels fit and how they are tilted.
A larger home or shop
As the capacity grows, the inverter rating rises and the panels are grouped into more strings. Larger systems may need a three-phase connection and a bigger protection box.
A commercial roof
A commercial roof often means several inverters, longer cable runs and a structure designed for the roof type, whether sheet, slab or shed. Load, shading and access for cleaning matter more here, so a site survey should come before the list is finalised.
Writing the list into a quotation
Replace the generic specification text with the product you will actually supply, fill in the make, and set each blank quantity. Keep the line names the same from quotation to quotation so customers can compare offers.
Frequently asked questions
Does an on-grid list include a battery?
No. A system with no battery has no battery line. If the customer wants power during an outage, look at the hybrid and off-grid lists instead.
Why are some quantities blank in the table?
Those quantities depend on the project, such as the number of panels or the metres of cable. The template cannot know them, so you set them for each quotation.
Is the make column filled in?
Not by default. The default list uses generic wording so it does not endorse a brand. Add the make you supply when you turn the template into a quotation.

Leaving a size-dependent quantity blank
Lines whose quantity is blank in the default list depend on the project, such as panels and cable runs. Set each one before the list goes into a quotation.
Keeping the generic wording
The default list uses generic wording and names no make. Replace it with the product you will actually supply before you send.
Promising backup from an on-grid system
An on-grid inverter switches off when the grid fails, so a system without a battery gives no backup during an outage.
What to check before you send
- Every blank quantity has been set for this project
- Each line names the product you will actually supply, with its make
- The customer knows this system gives no backup during an outage
- The sanctioned-load and phase rules of the distribution company were checked for a larger system
- Line names match your other quotations, so offers can be compared
