GSTIN and state code: meaning in solar
A GSTIN is the fifteen-character registration number of a taxpayer under GST. Its first two characters are the state code, the next ten are the holder's PAN, and the rest identify the entity and end in a check character. The state code shows which state the supplier is registered in.

In more detail
The state code is what lets two parties be compared: the same state code on supplier and place of supply means one tax split, different codes mean another.
A GSTIN that fails the format is easy to catch, but a well-formed one can still be wrong. Check it on the GST portal before relying on it.
Where it shows up in the app
The app checks the format when a company's GSTIN is saved and takes the state from a fixed table of codes. GST on a quotation is then worked out by comparing your company's state with the customer's state.

Leaving a state off
GST on a quotation is worked out by comparing your company's state with the customer's state, so both must be on file.
What to check before you send
- The GSTIN has been checked on the GST portal
- The state code matches the state your company is registered in
- The customer's state is on file
