VFD: meaning in solar

A VFD, or variable frequency drive, is an electronic controller that changes the speed of an AC motor by changing the frequency of the power it receives. In a solar pump system it runs the pump directly from the panels, speeding up in strong sun and slowing down when light drops, with no battery in between.

In more detail

Because the pump follows the sun, water output rises and falls through the day. That suits farm irrigation and storage tanks, where a steady flow is not needed at every hour.

The drive also protects the pump, for example by stopping it when there is no water to draw.

Where it shows up in the app

VFD is one of the system modes and installation types on a quotation, and it has its own default bill of materials without an inverter.

Common mistakes

  • Promising a steady flow

The pump follows the sun, so water output rises and falls through the day. That suits farm irrigation and storage tanks.

  • Adding an inverter or a battery line

A pump system runs from the drive with no battery in between, and its default bill of materials has no inverter.

What to check before you send

  • The system mode on the quotation is VFD
  • The bill of materials is the pump one, without an inverter
  • The customer knows water output follows the sun
